I thought the game had merit, but was flawed. Now you can buy what some may say was the best part of the title: The music.

The soundtrack, which was originally scored by Steve Henifin and performed by the FILMharmonic Orchestra and Choir Prague, is selling for $10 to $17 through Amazon.com, Best Buy, iTunes and CD label's Sumthing Distribution's website.

I can dig listening to a bit of Too Human when relaxing, maybe as ambient sound. But the write for the soundtrack's release totally lost me.

The music ranges by location and scenario. There are moments of long beds of orchestral music, followed by electronic/metal sounding tracks that put the listener into a different space altogether. There are also vast ambient tracks that are made of layers upon layers of sample-based sounds and evolving electronic sounding textures as well.

OK, I've got you so far...

So while the music and audio is Norse in its presentation, it is not exclusively Norse in its sound. It branches out quite a bit, but still stays in the realm of an ancient lost world of technology. It also has its moments using a more aggressive contemporary sound. In places, the Silicon Knights audio team brought in layers of electronic elements, but in a more subtle way. The cyber elements are more elegant and organic in style. In some cases the song style was influenced by the style of the instrument itself, whether that be a Balaban, Bone flute, Frame Drum, Bagpipe or something else, making the phrasing and general feel of a song constructed around the characteristic of that one instrument.

Annnnnnd, I'm lost.

Seriously - you see the guy at a Waffle House, slip him a napkin; he'll totally score your hashbrowns, and it will be majestic.

Look for the Fable II soundtrack at a retail location near you come November 25th, or you can always snag it from www.sumthingdigital.com or iTunes if you aren't into the whole going outside thing.

SUMTHING ELSE MUSIC WORKS ANNOUNCES RELEASE OF FABLE II ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK

Feautring Original Music Score by Russell Shaw and Fable Theme by Danny Elfman

New York – Nov. 6th, 2008 – Sumthing Else Music Works, Inc., through its licensing relationship with Microsoft Game Studios, proudly presents Fable II Original Soundtrack featuring the original music score by Russell Shaw and the “Fable Theme” from Danny Elfman. The original soundtrack from the Xbox 360™ roleplaying adventure video game will be released on Nov. 25, 2008 to retail outlets through Nile Rodgers’ Sumthing Else Music Works record label www.sumthing.com, and for digital download at www.sumthingdigital.com and iTunes®.

Fable II Original Soundtrack features the rich and musically diverse Fable II score composed by Russell Shaw (Fable, Black & White) as well as the Fable Theme by GRAMMY® award-winner Danny Elfman (Spider-Man, The Simpsons, Big Fish.) The Fable II score was recorded with 90 musicians including the Slovak National Symphony Orchestra at the Slovak Radio Concert Hall in Bratislava, as well as celtic instrumentalists with the Tiffin School Boys Choir and Pinewood Singers Adult Choir at Pinewood Film Studios in London, England.

”We had a lot of music to record, covering many different styles including chamber, celtic, classic, quirky, pure pizzicato, atmospheric and dramatic,” said Russell Shaw, Head of Music and Composer at Lionhead Studios. “Music for the game was broken down into four distinct categories: regions, script, combat and incidentals. Each region has its own orchestral theme which changes with the seasons in each chapter. Scripted moments have orchestral cues relevant to what is happening at that point in the story – sad, dramatic, mysterious, tension and danger. The final result is a very rich, Hollywood style score covering many genres.”

1. Fable Theme - Russell Shaw (Music Box Theme – Danny Elfman)

<![CDATA[ Jablonsky's Gears 2 Soundtrack Gets Retail Release ]]> Starting November 25th, gamers across the country wandering through the music section of their favorite big box store on the way to the video game section might just pause for a moment and go “Huh” as Sumthing Else Music Works releases the Gears of War 2 soundtrack to retail outlets. The soundtrack was composed by Hollywood composer Steve Jablonsky, whose work you may recognize from big-budget productions such as Transformers, The Island, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
“Epic gave me a blank canvas, which was really great,” said Steve Jablonsky, Composer for Gears of War 2. “I experimented with a lot of hybrid organic/electronic elements, and combined them with the power of a large orchestra and choir.”

Nothing says epic event quite like an orchestra and a choir, right? Worked for Halo after all. Heck, it even worked for Advent Rising, even if the epic had the word 'fail' after it.

SUMTHING ELSE MUSIC WORKS ANNOUNCES RELEASE OF GEARS OF WAR 2 THE SOUNDTRACK

Original Music Score by Hollywood Composer Steve Jablonsky and performed by the Skywalker Symphony Orchestra and Chorus

New York – Oct. 27, 2008 – Sumthing Else Music Works, Inc., through its licensing relationship with Epic Games, Inc., proudly presents Gears of War® 2 The Soundtrack. The original soundtrack from the highly anticipated blockbuster Xbox 360™ action video game will be released on Nov. 25, 2008 to retail outlets through Nile Rodgers’ Sumthing Else Music Works record label www.sumthing.com, and for digital download at www.sumthingdigital.com.

Gears of War 2 The Soundtrack features a new original music score composed by Hollywood composer Steve Jablonsky (“Transformers”, “The Island”, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”) and recorded with the Skywalker Symphonic Orchestra and Chorus at the world famous Skywalker Sound.

Epic Games wanted every aspect of Gears of War 2 to be “bigger, darker, and crunchier” than the original game, including the bombastic orchestral soundtrack. Drawing on his extensive experience scoring big budget action films as well as a unique musical repertoire and Hollywood production values, Jablonsky was the perfect match for creating the adrenaline-pumping, emotionally charged Gears of War 2 score.

“It’s been a real treat working with Steve on the score for Gears of War 2. We have a tremendous amount of confidence in him, and believe the Gears community will embrace the new sound," said Mike Larson, Audio Director of Epic Games. "We’ve designed Gears 2 to impact players on a deep emotional level, and much of that connection is made with music that grabs their attention and makes them feel personally involved with the game universe. We have aimed to create something a bit more serious, cinematic, and refined with a harder-hitting approach toward composition and production.”

“Epic gave me a blank canvas, which was really great,” said Steve Jablonsky, Composer for Gears of War 2. “I experimented with a lot of hybrid organic/electronic elements, and combined them with the power of a large orchestra and choir.”

<![CDATA[ Skate 2 Soundtrack Is All Eclectic ]]> I firmly believe that the most important aspect of a skateboarding title is its soundtrack. There was a point in time where my MP3 collection consisted solely of music from Activision's Tony Hawk series, and now EA has revealed the soundtrack for both Skate 2 and Skate It, consisting mainly of songs I already own. The press release tosses out the word eclectic, which is quite fitting. You've got your Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, and Motorhead, peacefully coexisting with the likes of LL Cool J, Wu Tang Clan, and Public Enemy. You've got Sly and the Family Stone, Suicidal Tendencies, and The Clash. Hell, even the songs I don't know are better just by being in the same list.

Hit the jump for the full soundtrack listing, keeping in mind that the songs with the asterisk next to them are the ones that are in both the Skate 2 and Skate It games. Even if you don't give a damn about the game it would make an excellent playlist for your next neighborhood barbecue.

EA Unveils Eclectic Soundtracks for Skate It and Skate 2
Track List Boasts Songs From Some of the Biggest and Most Influential Artists of All-Time Including Black Sabbath, Public Enemy, The Clash and Wu-Tang Clan

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Black Box, an Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS) studio, today revealed the soundtracks that will power the award-winning Skate It and Skate 2. These two skateboarding games bring the sport’s incredible tricks, epic moves and high energy to gamers with all of the fun – and none of the bruises! The 52 featured songs are from some of music's most influential and celebrated artists including Black Sabbath, Public Enemy, Judas Priest and Wu-Tang Clan.

“The soundtracks for Skate It and Skate 2 builds upon last year’s critically acclaimed Skate soundtrack,” said Chris Parry, Associate Producer. “The songs reflect the culture of skateboarding, with some tracks picked by the pros themselves, and others coming straight out of iconic skate videos. Skateboarding today is an eclectic mix of people and influences and this is true of where we took this year’s soundtracks. Look for some old school soul and funk, a few rock anthems, some good beats and a lot of classic punk!”

“Skateboarding culture is like no other culture in the world and with that comes a unique sound of its own," said Steve Schnur, worldwide executive of music and marketing. “Our goal was to create two soundtracks that bring together classic acts and explosive new bands while fearlessly crossing all genres. This soundtrack is truly a tribute to the skate lifestyle, where legendary tracks by The Clash, Judas Priest and WAR can stand alongside cult legends like Dayton Sidewinders and The Specials as well as groundbreaking new acts like Awesome Snakes and Money Your Love.”

Skate It and Skate 2 continue to deepen and expand the breadth of the Skate franchise. Skate It, a recent recipient of 2008’s Best Wii™ Game award at the German Games Convention in Leipzig, brings the fun and soul of skateboarding to the Wii and the Nintendo DS™. Skate 2 lets players flaunt their style like never before with double the bag of tricks on the PLAYSTATION®3 system and the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system.

<![CDATA[ On Games, Music, and Meaning ]]> I'm usually OK with soundtracks as long as they don't actively annoy me; of course, it's nice when they do something more than just provide not-too-irritating background noise I may or may not turn off. Douglas Wilson looks at the relationship between gameplay, music, and meaning (and what makes for a 'musical' game) over at GameSetWatch, picking a perhaps unlikely example to illustrate the relationship he's talking about: Civilization IV. After explaining precisely what he's getting at, Wilson opines:

Even though the music of a more “traditional” game may not affect the gameplay on the level of the code, it can certainly affect the way we experience the game mechanics, just as the game mechanics can alter our understanding of the music.

Indeed, since experience is ultimately what matters, I would argue that any deeply synergistic soundtrack-gameplay relationship that acts on an emotional or cultural level can be just as "musical" as the formal mechanisms of rhythm games – physical game controllers or no.

... Take a closer look at Civ IV, and you’ll see that the real meaning of the game lies somewhere between the mechanics, at those interstitial places where gameplay slides into and intersects other forms of expression.

Is Civ IV a music game? My favorite films (and games, for that matter) manage to weave together story, music, visuals, and all those other little bits that go into the making of media — often to splendid effect. But does that make them musicals, or music movies, or music games? Or "just" splendid, thoughtfully produced media? I'm not convinced on some of Wilson's points, but his overall meditation is worth a read.

<![CDATA[ We Cheer Track List Revealed ]]> I was going to spend a lengthy paragraph poking fun at the soundtrack to We Cheer, but as I read through the 30-song list I realized that many of these songs are on my iPod right now, so I've no room to criticize. Certainly not "Come Clean" by Hilary Duff, but come on, "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)"? Everyone needs this song on their MP3 player, just in case the occasion for everybody to dance (now) arises. "It Takes Two" by Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock, "Whoomp! (There It Is)", "That’s The Way (I Like It)" - all required listening.

I still wouldn't be caught dead buying the game, but if it were to mysteriously make it's way into the pile of games I pick up at my local game store without me noticing I might secretly play it when nobody is looking. Hit the jump for the full track listing.

<![CDATA[ NHL 2K9's Punk-Heavy Soundtrack ]]> Can you judge a sport by the music that video game publisher puts on their game's soundtrack? I've haven't really paid attention to ice hockey since the glory days of the Sega Genesis, so I couldn't tell you much about the sport, but NHL 2K9 definitely reflects my taste in music. There's some Pennywise in there, and The Ramones, and hey, Bad Religion and The Offspring! It's like a Crazy Taxi reunion! Perhaps the reason I have trouble getting into sports games is I'm trying to get into the wrong sports, or perhaps I'm reading too much into this soundtrack press release. Does the music match the sport? Hit the jump for the full listing, which might be light on tunes with only fourteen songs, but makes up for it with sheer quality.

For NHL 2K9 we have licensed a great collection of songs that complement the authenticity and spirit of the game."

<![CDATA[ Beats For The Beatdown - Facebreaker Soundtrack ]]> Crecente quite enjoyed his taste of Facebreaker at PAX (or maybe he just enjoyed beating up his son, it was hard to tell) although he found the gameplay a little simplistic. Will the just-revealed soundtrack for Facebreaker keep you pounding away into the night?

Predicatably, EA have plumped for plenty of tracks that have titles with references to fighting, a couple of hipster-bait acts and a good dose of agression-promoting guitarwork.

Fujiya & Miyagi's Sucker Punch, Dropkick Murphys' The Warrior’s Code, Knock Me Down by The Rivers and Tigarah's Girl Fight are representin' for People With Combat-Related Song Titles

<![CDATA[ Diablo III Comes To iTunes ]]> It may just consist of a single track, but we'll take the three minutes and forty-six seconds of Diablo III that we can get. The "Diablo III Overture" by Russell Brower & the Eminence Symphony Orchestra is yours for the downloading, free via iTunes as part of the Discovery Download series. The symphonic ditty will likely be familiar to anyone who's watched the Diablo III debut teaser, as portions of its braying pomp and circumstance were peppered throughout.

Yeah, it's iTunes and you'll be downloading an .M4P file, but factor "free" into your whining about that — and be thankful you're not downloading that old Blizzard downloader thing! Thanks to all who tipped us on the free music news.

<![CDATA[ Even Sims 2 Expansions Get Soundtracks These Days ]]> EA has just revealed the soundtrack for the upcoming The Sims 2: Apartment Life expansion, and while it may not contain They Might Be Giants performing in Simlish like the FreeTime soundtrack, it does have Good Charlotte, who have never appeared on a game soundtrack unless you count...all of them. At this point I've heard more Good Charlotte in video games than I have anywhere else, though I'm not sure if that says something about me, the music industry, or both.

Other artists joining Good Charlotte include Junkie XL, Katy Perry, and Sunny Day Sets Fire, one of those bands with a "look how cool our name is" name, made more infuriating by the fact that it is actually a pretty cool name. Hit the jump for the full track listing, or just turn the music off and stream your favorite music over the internet.

<![CDATA[ EA's Steve Schnur Explains The Hype Behind The Madden Soundtrack ]]> EA seems to want to make it clear that the announcement of Madden 09's official soundtrack is an event, and music boss Steve Schnur told Kotaku about a few more promotions to drive the point home: First, Target's pre-order bonus for the game will be an iTunes card that lets you download ten of the soundtrack songs free. Second, an artist from the soundtrack will be playing nightly on the Jimmy Kimmel Show beginning August 4th, and third, both past and current Madden artists will play at the first-ever "Maddenpalooza," an all-day music and gaming event in conjunction with the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on August 11th.

We were curious: why is this massive music promotion for Madden such a huge deal to EA? It seems perplexing at first to see a publisher throw so much muscle behind a soundtrack. But it turns out there's a rather sensible motivation behind it that seems to be a win-win for EA, music artists, and for the gaming audience (or would that be a win-win-win?)

Hit the jump for Kotaku's full interview with Schnur:

Schnur admits that licensed music in games is subjective, and often a contentious topic. "I do remember seeing a blog once where somebody accused me of 'doing it wrong' in Madden a couple of years ago because we didn't have any Miles Davis in there," he said.

"It was just one guy, but his comment stood in my head... I don't know how many bodies I want to crush on the football field while listening to smooth jazz. My point is, you can't please everyone."

Discovering new music is something that all people generally enjoy, said Schnur; it's not especially particular to gamers. "But the problem in the last ten years specifically is that radio and music television have failed kids," he said.

Schnur recalled an era that you don't have to be very aged to look back on — a time when fans of certain musical genres or artists would unite under the banner of a favorite radio station and wear its bumper sticker on their cars. But radio is much more genre-restricted now and circulates the same careful list of top hits, making the days of radio and music television as the primary means of music discovery largely obsolete.

"The consolidation of radio has ensured that the music that I grew up with would never be able to be discovered in 2008, because radio plays the same 20 songs across America," he said.

"So how do people discover music, or the new coolest band? Through the places where they spend time, and that's online and playing games. So we decided to take that simple thought process of bringing new bands, new songs, to where kids were."

In that way, Schnur hopes games can become a new music discovery tool for today's audiences. Many gamers, he said, have become turned on to a new artist by enjoying their level in a game like Rock Band or Guitar Hero, or by developing a positive association with it through Madden.

An added benefit to introducing music through games is that it removes the genre-bound context of radio. "We believe that hip-hop, rock, other forms of music... there's no reason to put up walls between them. Hip-hop artists love rock songs because of Madden and vice versa, when we don't hear them separated out on the dial."

Granted, Schnur doesn't expect gamers will like every song that makes a soundtrack. "If there are 30 songs in Madden, we're not going to bat a thousand, because obviously it's subjective. But the goal was that after you played Madden in 2004, 2006, 2009... 3 months later when you hear that Trivium song, you're gonna go, 'Oh, Madden'."

See where the 'win' for EA comes in?

And it goes a bit further — what if, by earning the fealty of young people's tastes through the connection to popular music, sports games could actually influence the aesthetic of real-world sports? Schnur said that in Madden's early days some players complained that there were too few traditional AC/DC or Gary Glitter-style "stadium songs" on the soundtrack like you'd hear at a real football game.

"Now, we have stadiums from Foxboro to Oakland playing the music of Madden," said Schnur. "Because what they've learned is that younger people get into sports initially through the virtual experience of playing games." Whereas ten years ago kids' primary intro to sports would be playing out in the street, today the sports video game is a significant part of many kids' diet, and the real world is now tasked with keeping up.

It becomes somewhat of a virtuous cycle, said Schnur, in which new music can use games to reach its audience better, games can use licensed music to richen the experience of games, and in a sports title, it completes the loop of an overall cultural experience, because sports are also participatory events in which music plays a role.

So what determined the songs that made it onto the recently-revealed Madden soundtrack? Schnur said it took two colleagues and himself from January and May to distill the final list down from 4,000 possible candidates.

"What a song has to do is, it has to serve the game - in the case of Madden, get you pumped up. We have to... see how it fits within the game, and if that band could potentially have an impact on people going forward." The latter refers to a timing issue, he said, in that he seeks out bands on a rising career arc or with a chance for wider success in whatever the present climate happens to be, rather than picking songs that were popular years ago.

And the artist, Schnur said, will have gotten 1 billion impressions from its turn in the game, more than it would have had on the radio. Gamers are happy to discover a new favorite song, and that benefits the artists, too, in obvious ways.

"Some of the bands may never get on the radio. But some might just change your life, musically speaking; you might end up buying tickets to one of their concerts in the future."

And when you're at that life-changing concert, you'll have Madden in mind, which has got to work out well for EA. Win-win-win.

<![CDATA[ Age Of Conan Gets Scandinavian Punk Rock Soundtrack ]]> Get ready for difficult-to-pronounce names. Composer Knut Avenstroup Haugen has done a two-disc soundtrack for Age of Conan, featuring a variety of Scandinavian musicians, including Helene Bøksle, folks from Norway's State Opera Choir, and three songs kicked in by rock group Turbonegro, who performed at the game's launch event.

That's Turbonegro in the pic above, by the way, sporting spooky eyeliner and a crossbow. Oh-kay!

The first disc has the in-game orchestral tunes, or at least the ones Avenstroup Haugen considers to be "the very best." The second CD has more orchestral music plus the Turbonegro tracks, and the announcement mentions that the band's lead singer Hank Von Helvete says he's read "every Conan comic." How many comics are there, guys? I actually don't know.

Helvete's result is apparently a "rock-anthem of Imotephian evil." I don't know what that means, either. Plenty of info on these musicians follows the jump; the announcement doesn't specify the soundtrack's release date, but says it will "soon be available at music retailers across the Western hemisphere." Plus, the first disc is already available on iTunes, so have at, iPodders.

Funcom Announce Age of Conan Soundtrack

Special Cooperation with Scandinavian Punk Rock Legends Turbonegro Leads to Brand New Conan Song

Launch Event RED Video Now Available – CD 1 Already for Sale on iTunes

DURHAM, N.C.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—In the wake of the wildly successful Age of Conan launch, Funcom is proud to announce the release of a special Age of Conan soundtrack CD. Published by Grappa Music and composed by Knut Avenstroup Haugen, the 2CD soundtrack sends the listener on a spellbinding musical journey throughout Hyboria, while diving into the darkest, deepest dungeons of Vanaheim along the way.

The first CD focuses on the in-game orchestral music, and the captivating score delivers something for all moods, ranging from the lush and serene to the primal and decadent. These are the very best tracks from the game, as selected and produced by composer Knut Avenstroup Haugen. Several great musicians have contributed to the score, among others the amazing Helene Bøksle and a large choir including members of the Norwegian State Opera Choir and other prominent musicians and singers. This allows for tremendous variation in the musical experience, and will soon be available at music retailers across the western hemisphere.

“It has been a great honor to create the score for Age of Conan. To provide musical content for a universe that is so vast, so varied and so rich has been a huge undertaking, but an experience that never ceased to be immensely enjoyable,” said Knut Avenstroup Haugen, producer and composer on the Age of Conan soundtrack.

As an added treat the soundtrack also comes with a special bonus CD, which includes eight more orchestral songs from the game. Not only that, it features no less than three songs by infamous rockers Turbonegro. After their legendary performance at the Age of Conan launch event, Turbonegro shifted into creative high gear and recorded a brand new song dedicated to their favorite barbarian, appropriately entitled “Destroy All Monsters”. With lead singer Hank Von Helvete claiming to have read “every Conan comic”, it’s clear that the creative partnership goes well beyond the ordinary, the result being a rock-anthem of Imotephian evil, capable of kicking any ancient Hyborian beast out of their thousand year long beauty sleep. Turbo-connoisseur's should also note that this is the very first recording the band does with their new drummer Tomas Dahl, hence the thunderous drum rolls opening the song. In addition to brand new “Destroy All Monsters”, the bonus CD also includes two additional songs from Turbonegro.

“It’s just perfect that Age of Conan is supported with a song from Turbonegro – the two hardest rocking pieces of entertainment to ever come out of Norway,” said Hank Von Helvete, lead singer of Turbonegro. “As a huge Conan fan, I am proud to be part of this statement against modern life boredom and common life impotency. Heads must and shall roll.”

During the last few years, Turbonegro has significantly increased their public appeal, and their fan-club now boasts more than 2600 world-wide chapters! The band has been featured in numerous feature films and TV-series, most notably CSI, Jackass (MTV-series + both feature movies), Wildboyz (title song), Viva La Bam and Dirty Sanchez, as well as the game Rock Band II. As a result of their incredible music and independent attitude, two tribute albums have been made, where bands like HIM, Queens Of The Stone Age, Therapy, Satyricon and others have given tribute.

You can already purchase CD1 of the soundtrack on iTunes, while CD2 will become available during June. The physical version of the soundtrack CD will become available across Europe in June, and is expected to be released in North America shortly after. Please visit www.ageofconan.com for more info about the game.

Should you wish to hear an excerpt from the orchestral part of the soundtrack, you can now download the official trailer from the Conan launch event. The video was made using multiple RED cameras, thereby utilizing the best available camera technology. You can download the video from the media section at http://community.ageofconan.com

<![CDATA[ Don King's Prizefighter Soundtrack Is Funktastical ]]> There is no way in hell I will every buy a copy of 2K Sports' Don King Presents: Prizefighter. I hate Don King, I'm not all that fond of boxing, and...wait, did you say Bootsy Collins? Awww dammit. That's right, Bootsy Collins is doing an original song for the upcoming fighting game, and when you add in songs by Parliament, James Brown, George Clinton, and Tower of Power, you've got an oddly funk-hungry Fahey on the verge of shelling out $60 based on the game's soundtrack alone.

Then of course I remember iTunes, but it was damn close there for a minute.

Joining Bootsy and the crew are some bands of the less funky persuasion, such as Run DMC, Suicidal Tendencies (though Infectious Grooves was pretty damn funky), Blue Oyster Cult, and Iggy Pop, so there really is something for everyone to remember to download from iTunes. Hit the jump for more info while I dig up a gift card I have lying around.

2K Sports Announces Soundtrack and Ring Walk Music for Don King Presents: Prizefighter

Bootsy Collins busts out his bass to set the mood for documentary-style boxing video game

May 28, 2008 – 2K Sports announced today the artists featured in the soundtrack and ring walk music for the highly anticipated boxing video game, Don King Presents: Prizefighter. To accurately capture different eras of boxing atmosphere, Venom Games compiled more than 70 songs to complement the game, from rock to rap to metal to soul and funk.

The soundtrack will include artists and songs such as Run DMC’s “It’s Tricky,” and Survivor’s massively popular “Eye of the Tiger,” along with legendary funk bassist, Bootsy Collins, who will provide an exclusive original “Prizefighter” theme song for the game.

"As an avid boxing fan myself, it's been a great pleasure having the opportunity to work on the theme song and be a part of Don King Presents: Prizefighter," said Bootsy Collins. "With different out-of-the-ring situations, documentary and exclusive interview footage, boxing fans are going to get funked up and totally involved with a funky sensation of being in the ring to feel the full boxing experience. Not only that, the music will rock you, knock you, and pounce on your ear hole. Watch out now, or you may get a standing 8 count! Bootsy Collins here, and in yo ear hole baba!!!”

Below are some of the artists* appearing in the soundtrack and ring walk music for Don King Presents: Prizefighter:

Blue Oyster Cult
Bootsy Collins
Boss Martians
George Clinton
Iggy Pop
James Brown
Parliament
Run DMC
Stereo Black
Suicidal Tendencies

<![CDATA[ Blue Dragon Soundtrack Released ]]> bluedragonsound.jpg While Blue Dragon didn't do too much for me as a game, the music was nothing short of wonderful - exactly the sort of thing I've come to expect from Final Fantasy legend Nobuo Uematsu. Now you can get all of the music with none of the boring blue gameplay as Sumthing Else Music announces the release of the Blue Dragon Original Soundtrack. Two-discs worth of Uematsu goodness should now be available at retailers nationwide, though knowing how well most shops stock these things you might be better off going for the digital download available from www.sumthingdigital.com for only $9.99, or wait for it to show up on iTunes.

<![CDATA[ On the Need For Better In-Game Winter Sounds ]]> winter_landscape.JPG I love the random stuff that occasionally pops up on Gamasutra, such as this combination how-to on doing winter field recordings and essay on why we need better ambient winter sounds in games. Part lavish love letter to snow and its various states, part practical considerations, Finnish game sound designer Tapio Liukkonen tells us why this stuff is important and why field recordings can trump studio technology:

More nuance, details, dynamics, crazy ideas, and hard work will raise the quality of game audio. Games get more interesting and unique soundtracks when you try novel techniques.

The play experience will be better, because the player won't hear typical snow sounds — they'll hear real sounds with real surfaces. Suddenly, your games feel fresh. The player might never realize what's different, but the game will feel fresh and new.

After all, I think that winter sounds can be amazingly hard to get, but it's worth it. The versatility of winter sounds is huge, so I really think that they should be taken seriously. I'm not saying that I recommend field recording only for the winter sounds, either. Many things can be done in studio with Foley, but sometimes you have to go outside and make it real.

I can't say I've ever listened terribly attentively to ambient snow noises, but I'm all for nuance and subtlety. As long as I don't have to shovel in-game driveways.

I'm not sure if I'm board with the whole Halo 3 soundtrack idea. Don't get me wrong, I love me some instrumental music, especially Tangerine Dream, but the Halo 3 music just doesn't do it for me. Nothing wrong with it while playing the game, but I don't see myself jamming to Zounds of Zanzibar or some such.

To celebrate the CD release, which hits in time for Thanksgiving, Microsoft is hosting a nationwide contest to select an artist or band to be included on the soundtrack. To enter you have to visit the Halo 3 MySpace and make your submission by noon Pacific on Oct. 22.

Hollywood music composer John Debney, who scored Passion of the Christ and Sin City, wrote up a little piece on his work composing the soundtrack for upcoming PS3 title Lair. He says the soundtrack can best be described as "operatic, ethnically rich, lyrical, elegant and, at the same time, tragic."

Debney worked with the London and Royal symphony orchestras as well as "some of the finest vocalists and instrumentalists in the world" to complete the ambition scoring. Hope on over to the link to give "Diviner's Theme" a listen and keep in mind that the music create for Lair would fill three complete movies, according to Debney.
