Atari's Future Is Online

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, new Infogrames CEO David Garner ands more fuel to the server-centric fire, discussing the importance of server-based and free-to-play games to the future of Atari - one of gaming's oldest brands.

"The business and the industry is moving online on a global basis. It's moving at different speeds in different countries, but it's pretty clear to me that the whole way that people are going to want to buy their games, play their games, interface with their games is network centric"
Drat. I was hoping they were going to go back to cartridges. While not that drastic of a backstep, Garner is placing emphasis on the amazing library of properties Atari has accrued over the years to pull them through.
"The good news is that we have a massive catalogue of properties. We have the DNA of every major company through gaming history - the Ocean, GT Interactive, Gremlin, Accolade factory of products, it's a long genetic history.
Here's hoping Atari doesn't fade back into retro t-shirt obscurity again any time soon.

These pictures showing a Sony receiver with a Xross Media Bar are kinda cool, but what I really liked was the Home Media Service with the XMB. Check out all of those movies.

Spontaneously Deleting City of Hero Superbases

Over 100 Supergroups in City of Heroes logged on last Friday evening to discover, oddly enough, that a dimensional vortex had sucked up their bases, leaving them standing in the middle of a Tron-like grid of red lines bisecting a gray, infinite plane. Worse yet, not only was the base gone, but all the items and prestige these groups had worked for had disappeared too. More »

Terrorist Guild Holds WoW Server Hostage

The Imperial Order, a World of Warcraft guild on the Detheroc server, is holding the server hostage. The guild has completed the various quests needed to obtain a septer used to ring a gong. Ringing the gong will open the gates giving everyone on the server access to new content, but the guild refuses to do it. At least, they refuse to do it until someone pays them 5,000 gold. More »
