Nexon Launches Combat Arms

Remember the uproar that was stirred when folks thought that EA's Battlefield: Bad Company would have weapons only available for purchase? For the few of you who actually liked the idea, Nexon presents Combat Arms, their first multiplayer online FPS. Along with a hearty selection of free weapons, Nexon allows players to purchase new weapons and equipment from their online store, tricking out their character to their hearts' and wallets' content.

You can head over to the official website to download the game for free and check out the tons of new content Nexon has added in honor of today's official launch, including new weapons, a new map, and the addition of a new game mode, Capture the Flag. Wait, they've only just added Capture the Flag? This should be entertaining.

UPDATE: Nexon contacted us to clarify that while items will be eventually be available for purchase for Nexon cash, upgraded weapons never will. Hit the jump for the full "Free to Play Pledge".

Free-To-Play MMORTS Dreamlords Launching Wednesday

Swedish Developer Lockpick Entertainment have been working on their free-to-play MMORTS Dreamlords: The Reawakening for quite some time now, but now they've dropped us a line to let us know that the game is ready for launch this Wednesday, June 18th. It's a nifty little title that combines an actual, downloaded RTS client with a web-based management system that essentially allows you to manage aspects of play when you generally shouldn't be, say at-work, for instance.

The game features three races, each with different balances between combat and management to allow players to focus on the RTS aspect they're most keen on. You can hit up the official website for more information, or hit up the gallery below for the latest screens of Dreamlords: The Reawakening.

Metal Gear Solid 4: The San Francisco Launch

Just a scant hour ago I made the trek down to the Powell Street GameStop to take in the midnight launch of Metal Gear Solid 4. Upon arrival, I was greeted with a line that went halfway down the block and around the corner. Roughly seventy five to a hundred and people waited patiently for the doors to open so they could once again get their hands on their beloved Solid Snake. First in line was lucky Kiattikhun Ratanatharathorn, known as "Bank" to his friends (pictured after the jump) who had been waiting for his prize since 6pm. He was accompanied by his friend James Demonico who wasn't actually there for the game but he owed "Bank" money so he came along for the ride (now I guess we know why they call him "Bank").

Metal Gear Solid 4 Japan Launch - Osaka

Compared to Tokyo's Metal Gear Solid 4 launch, the Osaka one seemed more low-key. Above is the line at the Sofmap in Den-Den Town (Osaka's version of Akihabara) a few minutes before the store opened. The line was about 13 or 14 people long. To see the other side of the truck, hit the jump.

GameStop's MGS4 Launch Event Details

You knew that GameStop wouldn't let something as big as the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots launch go by without burning the midnight oil to get PlayStation 3 owners the game as soon as humanly possible. The games retailer has announced that over 1,500 stores will be hosting special launch day events tomorrow, featuring trivia contests, a Big Boss costume contest, and special sneak-peaks at the game leading up to the 12:01 AM release.

Seeing as 1,500 stores is less than half of the stores located in the United States (GTA IV events were held at over 3,500 locations), I'd highly suggest that you call ahead (or check this list) before showing up at your local locations dressed as Big Boss, as your sad story of standing in a parking lot alone in an eyepatch and trench coat would make us cry, and we hate one-eyed people crying.

Weather-Watching And Waiting For Wii Fit

All of these happy people are in line to check out Wii Fit on its launch day. Pretty soon, I'll be heading out too, to check out the New York City launch day event down in Central Park.

That is, if the weather holds up. An ominous pattern of raindrops seems to be tapping on my windowpane, filling me with nightmarish visions of dying in the rain on a Balance Board. Oh, geez. [Thanks for the pics, Zell!]

Here Are Your WiiWare Launch Titles [Update]

You want advance notice for your WiiWare games? You're not getting any. The service is now up and ready for download (today being May 12 and all), and we've only just been sent the official list of launch titles from Nintendo. Interestingly, it differs slightly from the supposed list from late last week - which was based off Nintendo's own promo video for the service - which showed Dr Mario as one of the launch titles. It's not. There's actually six games launching today, not five, and those six range in price from 500 Wii Points (Defend Your Castle) to 1500 Wii Points (Final Fantasy CC). More »

GTA IV Launch - A Tale Of Two GameStops

What makes a great game launch? Some would say simply getting a highly coveted game like Grand Theft Auto IV into the hands of hungry gamers is enough, but to some of us a launch night means more than that. To some, big-name game launches are like mini gaming conventions, where we can swap stories, bitch about the way the store is handling things, and speculate on how much sleep we'll be losing over the next couple of days. Or, it can just be a line of people waiting. I attended two different midnight launches at GameStop tonight and got a healthy dose of both sorts of events, just 10 miles apart. More »

GameStop's Nationwide GTA IV Launch Events

Surprise - GameStop is hosting midnight openings for Grand Theft Auto IV! Okay, not so much a surprise. GameStop has announced that over 3,500 of their stores across the U.S. will be opening at midnight to sell Rockstar's latest masterpiece, with most stores hosting special events starting at 9PM on Monday the 28th, complete with trivia contests (what is doing a hooker, Alex?) and Grand Theft Auto character lookalike contests. You can hit up their official list to see which stores will be open, though it is a pretty safe bet that unless your GameStop is in one of those uptight malls that doesn't want possibly armed young adults wandering around with firearms after regular hours you'll be golden.

Best Buy Announces GTA IV Midnight Launch Locations

For those of you who enjoy waiting in line in the middle of the night to acquire a game that, we're just guessing here, will be in absolute ample supply with bajillions of printed copies, Best Buy has released their locations that will be opening for a midnight launch of Grand Theft Auto IV. We've pasted them after the jump, but be sure to call next week closer to the release as this information is subject to change. Oh, and don't forget about this deal, either.

I'm personally a little too old for midnight launches, as they cut into my hookers, blow and picking strange new hairs out of my back time. What about you?

Mario Kart Midnight Launch At Sam's Club

Looks like warehouse club chain Sam's Club had so much fun at their Super Smash Bros. Brawl midnight launch, they've decided to do another one, only this time for another game, because otherwise it would just be silly. Mario Kart Wii shall be the focus of this midnight launch, the second in Sam's Club history, with players and parents of players able to line up at stores across the country on April 26th to await the stroke of midnight and assuage their driving ambition. Don't have a Wii yet? A Sam's rep has informed us that every location will have at least 15 consoles on hand for the event, so you can kill two birds with one stone. The chain promises tons of copies on hand for the event, but you can always preorder at their web page, just in case. What they are trying to say here, is they want Sam's Club to be your video game store. Just don't try walking in without one of those membership cards, because their security will take you the f*** down.

Settlement Reached In PS3 Police Shooting

The PlayStation 3 launch was a dark time for gaming. Robberies, fistfights, and of course, the tragic shooting of 18-year-old college student and suspected PS3 thief Payton Strickland, shot through his door as policeman Christopher Long allegedly mistook the sounds of a battering ram for gunfire. Now a year and three months from the December 1st 2006 shooting, the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office has agreed to a massive settlement with the victim's family, along with a taped apology from Sheriff Sid Causey.
"I am profoundly sorry," Causey said against a backdrop of the United States and North Carolina flags. "I cannot begin to imagine the immense sorrow the Strickland family must continue to feel, but they will forever be in my thoughts and prayers. It is my hope that the Strickland family will accept this apology and know that it is offered with compassion and sincerity."

Patapon releases next week and having had the privilege of checking it out over the last couple of days, I can tell you it's a really great game. The art style alone is enough to send an artsy guy like me into the stratosphere. If you haven't yet checked out any of the media surrounding this games, be sure to check out this trailer to see what you've been missing. Loco-Roco fans will take to this like a second coming. Great stuff.
