exclusive first look inside the Game Hall

Visited E3 Hall... In Intensive Care

The lights were dimmed when I walked into what Tuesday will be transformed into the main gaming hall for E3. I almost expected to hear the gentle sounds of of life support equipment, the woosh of oxygen, the beep of an EKG monitor.

Instead there was the clank of the very tiny booths being assembled, the murmur of conversation and, perhaps only in my imagination, a gentle weeping.

Hey at least there will be the games right? The games are what matter, not the booths... right? Right?

Glimpse of Curt Schilling's MMO Copernicus Coming Via Jace

Jace Hall's next show is going to include an interview with Red Sox pitcher and MMO addict Curt Schilling along with an early look at Schilling's massively multiplayer game Copernicus. The actual show hits on Thursday. In the meantime hit the jump to listen to the catchy extended-version of the Jace Hall theme song. It has head-lopping and base capturing!

Jace Hall's Video Game Show Promises to Blend Celebrity With Humor

Jason Hall, former Warner Bros Interactive senior veep, ditched the game development business back in February to kick-start what he hopes will be a future as a webtube star.

Newsweek's N'Gai Croal sat down with Hall recently to check out his idea, a weekly video game themed five-minute web show that mashes together celebrity, gaming and a bit of humor all for free on Sony's Crackle service or $1 a pop on Xbox Live Marketplace.

Hall, who developed Monolith, said he decided to jump ship and get into a different form of entertainment because he felt that the culture of video games isn't really covered.... yeah, because I don't know a single site that covers gaming pop culture... not one.

Annnnyway, I do like the look of what Hall is doing. I haven't seen a full episode yet, but I do think he faces a challenge with a five minute net vid. As I told Adam just last week, five minutes of video on the internet is like a director's cut. He's really going to have to keep it snappy if he wants the ADHD internet audience to stick around for that long.

You can catch a glimpse of it and read more details about how the Jace Hall Show came about on Level Up.

the great experiment

Hall Crawl: Hungry Like the Wolf

We are officially eight beers and about two Jager Bombs into the show. After hanging out at the Activision booth for way too long watching McWhertor pwn at Guitar Hero III, we realized we were out of time and high-tailed it to Hall number three where Sony and, more importantly, SingStar was located.

We arrived just in time to find a clutch of booth babes and booth bucks hogging the machine doing a monstrously-bad rendition of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive." The song, or attempt at a song, ended with the woman in charge of the microphone thanking everyone and tuning off the sound system. It took a little sweet talking by Mark, Mike and I before we convinced them to let us, sans beer, to get them to turn on the sound again and have a go at a song... specifically Duran Duran's "Hungry Like the Wolf", the drunk man's opus.

After knocking it out of the ballpark, Mike and I walked from the stage trying our best to keep the shrieking fans from tearing our t-shirts from our sweating backs. Fortunately, we found shelter in a beer garden where I sat to type this, perhaps my last bit of prose, out to you, our beloved readers. I gotta pee, back back later.

Michael McWhertor drunkenly copy edited this drunkenly written post.

the great experiement

Hall Crawl: Rock Me Like a Hurricane

Fuck 9:30 a.m., it's well into 5 p.m. here in Germany and we're well into our... um.. three Jagerbombs and five beers.. GERMAN beers. Around beer number two we noticed that the dank, stinking, littered halls of Games Convention had magically transformed into a sort of beer garden discotheque Valhalla replete with booth babes, Germanic gamers and lots of alcohol.

We've managed to squeeze in a couple more beers each as we wandered the halls, first waiting in line for a facial (Mark's idea), then after losing interesting taking pictures of flying BMXers and naked booth babes. We ended up, somehow, at the Activision booth waiting in line for WAY TOO LONG behind Activision employees for a chance to play Guitar Hero 3.

I was hammering away at medium and Mark at expert when a Kotakuite came up to say "Hi. We sat and talked a bit and then I hopped online to post this lovely bit of almost-drunken prose.

And then Mark streaked around the Activision booth: The end!

Hands-On With Wii Williams Pinball

If you read Kotaku regularly you may have noticed I'm a sucker for some video game pinball. Give me a controller and a relatively accurate rendering of the silver ball and I am a happy camper. A while back I wrote up a press release about Crave's Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection, which is being released sometime this year on the PS2, PSP, and this time around the Wii. A follow-up to the previously released Gottlieb Collection, this anthology features one of my favorite tales of all time, Pinbot. When I visited with Crave at E3 I got a chance to get hands-on with the Wii version of the game, and I have to say that after playing through several balls on good old Pinbot, I am spoiled for virtual pinball on any other system More »

Linden Labs Responds to Open Letter

Not too long ago, concerned citizens of Second Life posted an open letter to Linden Labs about the growing number of issues that have affected SL since its recent boom. Last Thursday at a town hall meeting, the publisher tried to address those concerns through an open forum held in the virtual world. Speaking on behalf of Linden Labs was CTO Cory Ondrejka who was often the victim of some heated caps-locked comments. The participants of the town hall meeting weren't satisfied with the fuzzy time frame Linden Labs had for resolving the outstanding problems, and were also infuriated at the fact that Linden Labs rarely responds to complaints and issues that are pointed out to them by residents. Dani Bunten To Enter AIAS Hall of Fame

One of the more colorful characters from the early days of Electronic Arts, Dani Bunten is to be posthumously inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame during the D.I.C.E. Summit early next month. Bunten is responsible for some of the greatest early computer games, including the legendary M.U.L.E. While she started life as Dan Bunten, her gender was transcended by her mastery of game design. Speaking with GameSpot, Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins had nothing but praise for Bunten.
"Dani was a great leader and source of inspiration that we will never forget. Dani's selection for the Hall says something very positive and very important about how influential Dani was as a thinker and designer and how that leadership inspired so many others."

Sid Meier will be accepting the award for Bunten, who passed away in 1998 at the age of 49. GameSpot has audio reactions from Will Wright and AIAS president Joseph Olin, and I have included a link to her Wikipedia entry so those unfamiliar can learn more. A richly deserved honor for a true master of game design. More »

Zombies Vs. Ambulance

From the 'Worst of E3' department, leave it to the denizens of Kentia Hall to make a game called Ambulance Vs. Zombies look this boring. How designers this incompetent could somehow light upon the greatest idea for a video game in the history of... hell, let's just say it... the universe and then mess it up this bad is beyond me. - Florian Eckhardt

E3 Floor Plans Revealed

Yes! Now we can chart our early morning sprints to the Nintendo booth, elbowing other journalists and fanboys away from the Revolution stations. Looks very similar to last year, but for those of you concerned that Microsoft has a "small" booth, keep in mind, they generally do the two-floor thing, maximizing their space. More »
