"perhaps they have stages that can be laid out following the Z axis as opposed to the X axis (kinda like the first crash bandicoot games)... it kinda makes sense as it's not a huge stretch from what they've shown so far, but changes the dynamic of the game completely... though with the focus on multiplayer on one screen, this sounds unlikely...
