"It's always the same with MS operating systems, everyone hates it at launch and then proclaims it the best thing since sliced bread when the next one comes along.
DX11 actually has some nifty features as it allows DX9,DX10,DX10.1 hardware to run through not only for 3D (limitations based on hardware applying of course) but also for GP-GPU based apps to tap into the GPU.
If you are developing a Windows game then targeting the DX11 API should cover Vista, Win7 and the bulk of GPU's out there of course WinXP + DX9 would still have to be catered too but it takes some of the work out of it for the more modern Windows platforms."
"@kenjara:
Nvidia paid Activision for that map pack to be released on the PC, it wasn't quite "free" to PC gamers & Nvidia did it to try and prop-up CoD4 on the PC as PC gaming is important to their business."
"Microsofts marketplace wont kill steam but it will stop it dead in its tracks.
All Microsoft has to do is include a link to the GFW Marketplace client in Windows 7 along with the other links for the Windows Live suite of apps and the GFW Marketplace client will be installed on more Windows machines than Steam could ever manage.
I always wonder why there is a weird hate relationship with MS and PC gamers even though the "PC" has little do with computer gaming."
"@Moleculor:
Vast majority of sales are 360/PS3 in the UK PC sales only accounted for 17% of sales.
Also the fact that Spore has sold 2 million (wich is a big deal for a PC only game) shows that only niche group of PC gamer fanboys have their panties in a twist the rest dont care about the DRM."
"If you have installed the update all you have to do is:
1)make sure you unplugged the Xbox from the net
2)wait until 19th
3)download official NXE release & install via CD/USB
4)plug back in net access and your good to go"
"@Komrade_Kayce:
I completely agree with you as well, bugs the hell out of me those proclaiming Fallout 3 the best thing since slice bread without having even played it."
"@mrt181:
Of course there's piracy but on the 360 its bottled up among the hardcore pirates, the masses are too stupid or too afraid on how to do it.
Different for the PC anyone can just type into Google what they want and there it is for you pre-cracked and all."
"Better than other systems at least with the de-activation option.
If this DRM doesn't actually cut into certain kinds piracy I wonder what the response will be, they always have the option to not make PC games any more it's not like the PC is generating the bulk of the revenue that the PS360."
"I'd agree with JonthanStrange comments, parts of PC gaming are dying but other parts are not so you can write off the platform as a whole.
David Braben basically said the same thing as Molyneux though in a more diplomatic way that the mainstream devs are leaving and the market is diverging in different directions.
The market is changing and those still into PC gaming are no longer buying certain titles with only major franchises still having any pull, but also seem to suck the life out of everything else at the same time.
Personally I'd like PC gaming to stop being a tech fest, the graphics nerd scene (as a former member) is rife with piracy and constantly upping the ante has only brought PC gaming to its knees."
"It will sell millions of copies on the consoles no doubt but without that crutch and if they were relying on the PC alone I think they would be singing a different tune about DRM.
They dont have to force the issue on the PC because the bulk of their sales are going to be from other platforms."
