How To Scratch a 360 Disc

scratchy.jpg

More dirt has come our way from one of the Microsoft moles.
Last week the mole reported on the specific beta-test problems with the 360, some of which seem to still exist. This time the mole has sent us an interesting list of 360 problems and rumors. Please take all of this with a huge grain of salt:

Disc Scratching

The mole claims that discs can get scratched in one of two ways either by moving the system when a game is playing while the console is in a vertical position or by letting a game sit in the system for a long period of time in the horizontal position.

The mole claims that a large number of 360s for sale on eBay and the Seattle area Craigslist are in fact being listed by Microsoft employees. Not sure what the mole is implying here, but it's kinda interesting.

  • Let me get this straigh, this mole's news is that if I move my console while the disc is spinning, I risk scratching the disc. Am I the only one that thinks "DUH" when I read this? This isn't a portable walkman, so expecting it to have shock resistance or somehow have stabilizing tech built into it to withstand movement during operation seems to be some seriously wishful thinking on someone's part. I'm guessing I have the same risks in moving the console during operation that I'd have with my PS2, Xbox, or even my PC. This goes without mentioning that it is plugged into the wall, so what type of mobility do you expect anyway? The only issue where I could see this being a serious problem is the "roomate kicking it over thing" and the "I'm so rich I installed a X360 in my car" thing. While the former is no fault of the conole, the latter means to me you have too much money anyway. :) The part about it being in "horizontal too long" seems odd too. What would cause it to scratch a disc in horizontal operation after 10 hours of play rather than 5? I know you said to take it with a huge grain of salt, but this may require an industrial fork lift to get this salt block off the ground. Peace

  • I would imagine that Microsoft employees are selling them on ebay/craigslist because they can sell some systems without taking as much as a loss, because the open market value of the thing is actually a lot higher than Microsoft's street price. I was wondering the other day why they weren't doing things like that, but I guess they are.
