The Imperial Order, a World of Warcraft guild on the Detheroc server, is holding the server hostage. The guild has completed the various quests needed to obtain a septer used to ring a gong. Ringing the gong will open the gates giving everyone on the server access to new content, but the guild refuses to do it. At least, they refuse to do it until someone pays them 5,000 gold.
They say they'd rather be known as the obnoxious guild that held their server hostage than forgotten as the kind guild that opened new content.
Nobody remembers the fair and quietly intelligent people we meet in their daily lives, but everyone remembers those who ruin their day. We'll have plenty of time to conquer this new content, but for now we see an endless novelty in holding it hostage. And this is what we will continue to do: Hold it hostage.

This is awesome. I love it when things like this happen. It almost makes me wish I was playing World of Warcraft.
Life always finds a way. Sounds like Blizzard had to have planned something like this to happen. Why else have an item that can be used like an item. Of course, others can just do it themselves right? Or is there only one s"c"epter?
More than one guild can create the Scepter of the Shifting Sands, for instance on my server I created it first, and then a couple of Alliance guilds finished theirs a few weeks later. Blizzard hasn't really included "One Per Server" items - yet. On many servers, however, more than one guild working on a Scepter was frowned upon because it was looked at as valuable "man hours" that could be lost from farming for other items during Blizzard's "wtf farmathon 2006."
I hope the other guilds realize that you don't negotiate with terrorists, especially ones that aren't smart enough to realize that you need to threaten to behead a few gnomes before people will listen....
I am pretty sure that Blizzard stated that if the gates were not opened in a certain amount of time they would auto open on thier own.
Tensions building towards all-out warfare on the server over the sceptre? I hope Blizzard don't intervene, this is exactly what online gaming is supposed to be about.
I only wish their statement was in character. MMOs would be so much more fun if people were committed to the fantasy experience.
this is hilarious. I am not even going to make the obligatory parent's basement joke. If might actually try to play WoW if it mean I could join a Fellowship of the Guilds with thousands of other users and try to take down The Imperial Order in a battle reminiscent of LOTR's battle of Helm's Deep.
http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.aspx?fn=wow-realm... It was all just a joke. Either that, or they chickened out. They have a list of the donations they got - I feel sorry for the sap that chucked 5g. I'd have to give that a full 10/10 for huge, attention-grabbing, well-exectuted trolling.
Sounds like something straight out of the ideas of Machiavelli. A ruler would be better off feared, than loved. ;)
