In 1985, Nintendo released Super Mario Bros., which went on to become the best-selling video game of all time. If you were alive at that time, chances are you played Mario—especially in Japan, where almost every household had a Famicon. Well, every household except Japanese comedian Shigenori Yamashita's. (He even admits to never touching a Famicon!) Years later, here Yamashita is, playing Super Mario Bros. for the first time, discovering mushrooms, Goombas and Question Boxes. Hilarity ensues.

Could anyone tell me from what show this was from?
What I would like to know, is how is he playing on a Gamecube controller, is there some sort of complitation for Gamecube that I am unaware of?
I think the best part was when he dodged the mushroom... lol
That was awesome...I love how he thought the mushroom was an enemy, which is understandable if you have never played Mario...
And the unfortunate, but entertaining, stereotype that every Japanese is a videogame king is irrevocably and forever shattered. :(
Dodging the mushroom and the fall into the pit cracked me up.
I remember playing it for the first time at one of those in store demo units. After I talked the parents into buying the duck hunt/mario combo system I remember playing it all the time. The first time I beat it was one morning before school...and I never woke up early. Do any of you older people remember an atari store demo system? I swear I remember playing one at Wal-Mart and it had Hide-n-Seek on it.
Gain Bijou, that was the first thing I thought too. For one thing that version of SMB is not the enhanced version like what was on Super Mario All Stars so it almost looked like it was the original on an emulator. I think it would be tough playing with the analog stick. It's funny, when I play emu'd games on my modded xbox I use the D-Pad exclusively.
I'm pretty sure he's playing the game on the Game Boy Player on the Gamecube. If you look in the upper right corner, you'll see Game Boy Player options.
Is it funny if I can understand Japanese?
Yeah right, I guess if he was older, maybe he would ahve never played Super Mario, but since he is a comedian, he's just making a sketch to make everyone laugh at him for "not playing good". Kind of like a Mr. Bean of gaming since japanese are so into video games since day one.
Most definitely Game Boy Player with the Nintendo (or in this case Famicom) classic series.
vakero, I dunno. The way he gave up at the end out of emarassment seemed pretty genuine. He seemed REALLY embarassed, and it sure didn't feel acted out at all.
My favorite part is where he dies in the exact same place again. This actually reminds me of the guy who went through the entire game without collecting a coin.
Does anyone have an transcript translated into english? I feel like I'm missing out on something...
Adamcole, the game you are referring to is probably Sneak N' Peek by Quaker Oats...I mean, U.S. Games. http://www.atariage.com/screenshot_page.html?SoftwareLabel... I remember picking it up for 2 dollars at Kay Bee and it was surprisingly fun to play, especially with another player.
