A New, High Techy Eye Toy?

A next generation PlayStation deserves one thing: a next-gen Eye Toy. Sony Computer Entertainment submitted patent number 2006-178948, which is believed to be the new Eye Toy. This could counter the lackluster response to Sony's motion sensor controller. The patents says, in a nutshell, that a camera will recognize the movements and positioning of objects and then translate this in-game. The new technology enables a single 2D camera to analyze objects in full 3D by using a patented mapping technique. Previously, two cameras were needed to map objects into full 3D. Say what you want about Sony's brain farts of late, the company still has some effing great engineers. So bring on the goofy boxing and fighting games, but in full HD!

  • I don't know. I'm reserving judgment. Eyetoy was cool, but it was also quite gimmicky. I'm not expecting anything else, lest my hopes get let down. I've long since learned that Sony promises what they can't necessarily deliver.

  • Hm, the Wii pretty much does it with its controller. This eyetoy 2 sounds like the samurai game you can play at the arcades.

  • I'm guessing there's still a reason that most game companies make their actors wear special suits to get their movements recorded. Until the Eye-Toy comes with one of those, I'm not betting on pulling any kung fu in my living room.

Sony's Eyetoy is very cool, I don't see why everyone would be so down on the second gen version.

  • Good thing that guy doesn't own a couch or any other [non-plastic] furniture to trip over!

His shopping list went something like this:

    PS3
    Widescreen TV
    Furniture

...sadly he could not afford them all.

  • I just love how Sony keeps attaching things to the ps3. the motion remote, a new eyetoy. just focus on getting your damn system OUT and SOLD before goin ahead with all these other things. silly sony.

  • I just wish Sony would push the EyeToy device more onto developers. The original EyeToy had potential, but no one wanted to use it. The only real uses of the device was for games made by the makers of EyeToy, and musical games that let you see yourself sing "Like A Virgin" in your own drunken stupor.

With 3D mapping, the potential just skyrockets. I'd love to play a Myst-like game with the EyeToy, or a Katamari game where you actually roll the ball with your hands. But still, the EyeToy seems like it'll suffer the same fate as light guns, dance pads, and rumble feature vibrators.
