IGN Wii Rumors Pulled Because Insider Feared Prosecution

The posting, pulling, editing and republishing of IGN's Wii Release Rumors is proving interesting reading, in and of itself.

The history of its publication is that it was published late last night, then very quickly pulled. When it was reposted, it was missing any mention of a Portable GameCube, as well as a revision of the fact that 5.5 million Wii's were due to be produced by the end of the year.

So what happened? Well, it turns out that Nintendo's insider freaked when he saw the article, stating that he did "not wish to go to jail this week." The changed facts were probably the ones that could be traced back to him, according to 1UP.

Why hack the paragraph about specs? Because that paragraph on the Broadway processor coupled with the information/speculation that a revised processor may be used in a handheld that may play GameCube games could be the paragraph that outed the source's origin. Loose lips sink ships.

All rather fascinating, and clears up a lot of my confusion about what the hell was going on. So to recap: IGN didn't leak anything; an inside Nintendo source spilled release date and price. But the original article potentially outed the source, so it had to be changed. Of course, thanks to Internet sleuthing, that source — if outed — is no doubt still squirming at his desk this morning.
