Rumor: PS3 Connect and PSP Connectivity Tidbits

An EB Games employee sends word that the company, in conjunction with Sony, has launched a training website that is meant to get their sales people up to speed on all the Playstation 3 has to offer.

Most of the information on the site is already known, but there are a few tid-bits of note. First the page has this to say about PSP connectivity with the PS3:

The HDD will become a storage space for the massive amounts of media you will be sharing with your PSP (movies, music, TV shows, game content.).

That's right, they list TV shows, music and movies, which has me hoping that the PS3 will have the ability to stream television, music and movies directly to your PSP live over WiFi. That would be sooooo sweet.

There's also a bit on the site about Sony's online service for the PS3. Something we know next to nothing about.

Unfortunately, the information is presented in a laundry list. Instead of trying to figure it out and risk getting it wrong, I'm just going to present it here.

_PS3 ONLINE_ *Communication/Community:* *Voice/Video Chat* *Messaging* *Lobby/Matchmaking* *Score/Ranking* *Friend List/Avatar* *Game data upload/download

*Commerce: *
*Shop (accessible from inside games)*
*Content download*
*Micro payment*
*Subscription*
*Entitlement (user access rights) management

A couple of things pop out to me. It sounds like it's going to offer just about everything that the Xbox 360's Live offers, though it's not clear what the interface will be like. I'm not too happy about that word subscription in that second batch of descriptors. And why are they calling Entitilements "user access rights"? I thought they were supposed to be like achievments, or did I miss something?

Well Sony only has a month and a half left to explain PSP conncectivity and PS3 online to us. I expect the info to hit something in the next few weeks.

  • doesnt look theres an "achievement" system sadly, or even an Xfire games played log which would have been an excellent addition.

  • Wait, so you can possibly stream TV and movies to your PSP over WiFi? If you can do that using WiFi internet from anywhere it would be cool. But if it's just local WiFi, why don't you just watch TV on your actual damn TV?

  • I'm sure its from anywhere over the internet. If its just an IP to IP streaming video then there is no reason why it wouldn't work via any WiFi access point as opposed to you in your living room/home.

  • Yeah I've heard about those entitlements. I think it had something to do with those DRM rumours (you know, you won't be able to play used games on your PS3). I know Sony "debunked" those rumors. But remember, they also "debunked" the launch delay rumors too...

If entitlements are a form of DRM, than why would videogame retailers give the PS3 large shelf space when they can't make a profit off used games?

  • "I thought [entitlements] were supposed to be like achievments, or did I miss something?"

I thought you won entitlements to get freebies - achievements, but actually worth something. Who knows?

  • I still get a laugh out of "Entitlements." If they were real entitlements, theyd just give you the points as soon as you booted up and say that you are "Teh Bestest Player EVA!!"

  • Dear Sony:

We want games for our PSP, not subpar multimedia capabilities for our portable GAMING system.

    -Your Fanbase.

  • Why the heck don't they tell this to the DEVELOPERS

  • Second that, deathcoil.

  • I really hope Sony isn't half-assing the online service, so soon to launch and so little info is not a good sign. I'm not a fanboy for any console, but the PS2 online was a joke compared to XBOXlive. Well, there is no comparison.

  • There you have it - exactly whats wrong with PS3's online offering, even at this very late stage its just a bunch of bullet points; if I recall correctly by this time last year Microsoft had showed us pretty much all we wanted to know about how the 360's online functionality was going to work.

If that wasn't enough the sheer dearth of PS3 titles sporting online functionality should be enough to convince you they are making it up as they go along, no vision whatsoever!

  • Sheer dearth of online PS3 titles?!!??! You are kidding right? Right?

Give me a break. The PS3 has plenty of titles that are going to have online capabilities.

  • Is it just me, or is Sony waiting a long damn time to start advertising their baby? Are they broke for ad bucks or what? I hope they dont start campaigning on Nov.17, cause I think they could use all the momentum they can get!

  • TrustyBadger says:

If you want to talk about no imagination whatsoever how about Microsofts continous bashing of 1080p, but look what they are supporting now. No HD-DVD games they said, poo-poo on those. Now they seem to be singing a different tune. No vision you say? Then why does Microsoft need to follow in their footsteps?

  • Lachoy - list, please. Oh, and specifics, you know, like how many players per server, types of multiplayer, connection requirements.

Also, since I have noted some Xbox 360 games will (and I am dubious on this claim) allow for PC-to-Xbox multiplayer (ownage!) is there any similar feature for PS3?

Is it too much to ask that before you drop 600$ on an unproven system that they explain how it is going to work?

  • • *Entitlement (user access rights) management,
    aka Digital Restrictions Management.

Don't fool yourselves into thinking it's anything else.

  • in ref to: "Wait, so you can possibly stream TV and movies to your PSP over WiFi? If you can do that using WiFi internet from anywhere it would beTV Anywhere device and a cool."

you already can do this w/sony's Location Free Player device and a PSP w/version 2.50 or above firmware.. just an fyi..

Yeah, that's the Live Anywhere system. Shadowrun and Halo 2 are the only two games confirmed so far... Basically, "Games for Vista" are going to roll with an Xbox Live setup. You're gonna (supposedly) have a gamertag and be able to get achievements on either the Vista or 360 version of the game.

So far no third party titles have been announced, supposedly 'cause Microsoft has a bunch of certifcation stuff they're doing for it... Basically, your game has to be done for 360 and Vista (duh), have achievements, be able to connect to Xbox Live from both platforms, and just not suck in general.

I for one cannot wait to run circles around mouse + keyboard noobs. :P
