In a recent issue of The Official PlayStation Magazine UK, famed game creator Hideo Kojima talked about his upcoming Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Tidbits—The game won't take place in only the Middle East, but also South America and Eastern Europe. It is Yojimbo-like in its play, making it possible to choose and switch sides. MGS4 turns the FPS genre on its ear, undermining what we've come to expect from a shooter. Kojima explains further just how this installment is different:
To use a funny analogy—in the past, the MGS series was like a bank robber trying to rob a bank at night; so there are guards, cameras etc. And when you get spotted you're instantly known as the robber. But in this game, you're going into the bank at midday. You might just be a customer going in to make a deposit, but you still have to sneak in to accomplish your mission. So you're trying to deceive. You're on camera, so if you do weird things you'll be spotted as the robber, but if you don't you won't.
What's more, those giant robotic cyborgs (Called GEKKOs) aren't necessarily only after Snake. In some situations, they're the enemy, and in others, they are cohorts. The game is "finally out of the research stage" and looking at a late 2007 (probably early 2008) PS3 release. But, what about the SIXAXIS controls?
We can't say how we'll use the motion-sensing functionality specifically but we'll use it for sure. The controls in MGS3 got a little complex, so you'll have a little more direct control in MGS4. That said, I miss the rumble, and even now I hope it will come back.
So do we Hideo, so do we.

More people with influence and stature, like Hideo need to push Sony.
They already lost their ass on the battery fiasco, so what's another 10-100 mil. to settle with Immersion, and bring back the rumble?

Hideo discription of how the game will play "But in this game, you're going into the bank at midday. You might just be a customer going in to make a deposit, but you still have to sneak in to accomplish your mission." sounds very much like how the last hitman played, no?
This interview makes me want to play MGS4 even if I didn't really like the 3rd game. Here's hoping that Sony loses their exclusivity to the title and they bring this to the 360 as well.
"I miss the rumble" as would I if I was daft enough to buy a PS3. If it's good enough for Hideo to say it, then the thousands of us who have also said it can now rest in peace, vindicated, and safe from the Sony Fanboy BS about it not being at all important.
Way to take a step backwards in your "next-gen" Sony.
Hey Hideo... I hear the 360 has rumble support. ;)
since they are definitly including motion sensing i m guessing a 360 version is almost as unlikely as a wii version
I can see Sony re-releasing the DualShock. I even blogged that they would and that MGS4 may be the game they re-release it for. Sony say they won't re-release the DualShock for the PS3, but they also said they weren't going to change that horrible bat-a-rang controller they 1st unveiled. Sony's word isn't worth much.
It sounds alot like Assassins Creed's social stealth.
I love this guy. He's a genius game creator, and he's forever talking in similes. What more could you ask for (other than rumble for this game)?
Screw Assassin's Creed...the concept sounds terribly like the concept of the Hitman games (especially the second of the series, Silent Assassin), where donning disguises, carrying the right weapon for your disguise, walking calmly and keeping your cool can get you leagues farther in a level than straight-up run-and-gun action and/or visual and auditory stealth, which the the Hitman games still give you the choice to do, by the way.
He made really good use of rumble feature. Anyone remember Psycho Mantis? Enough said right there.
That's nice, Hideo also misses the rumble, I hope after this, sony makes their mind to pay immersion, after all immersion said that there's a way to maintain the motion sensing with the rumble.
Oh, and it's a shame that Kojima didn't give any hint about working on a Zone of the Enders 3, that would be great!
You know, I was one of those people who were PISSED about them removing rumble. Now that I have a PS3 and have played it a lot, I didn't even notice it was missing. It took me a few hours to even think about it and then it was a fleeting feeling of missing something.
I really miss the rumble too :( !
"Now that I have a PS3 and have played it a lot, I didn't even notice it was missing. It took me a few hours to even think about it and then it was a fleeting feeling of missing something."
You miss it if it was there and then taken away. Gears Of War uses it to warn of emergence holes and other stuff, racing games give feedback about getting close to the limit and overall I would take it over some bodged-on motion sensing any day of the week. We've had it since last-last-gen so to take it away is just wrong.
I'm still thinking that this going to come to the 360 also. I don't see how Konami could afford not to release it on both platforms. Sony is no longer the company with a large install base.
I have to see if I really miss the rumble when they launch PS3 in EU. I switch it off for many PS2 titles, but for some it's really well implemented. And not too surprised to hear they have more areas than the Middle East in MGS4, Konami is master at keeping secrets that other companies leak daily.

Less stepping back than taking HDD from developers and bringing memory cards back IMO, but stepping back nonetheless.
MGS has always been an example of a ways to use rumble to vastly enhance the gameplay experience. As mentioned before, Psycho Mantis told you to put your controller on the floor so he could move it with his mind (rumble it so hard it moves a bit).
Another less obvious example is how every time you're seen, not only is there the loud characteristic ! noise, but there's also a sharp jolt of rumble to really catch you off guard.
mgs4 is the only reason im getting a ps3, as far as rumble is concerned i always switched that off i find it annoying and unrealistic unlike force feedback you get on wheels. the only thing thats gona piss me off is we will probably get a SUBSTANCE version of mgs4 a year later with internet play and some other cool features and i want mgs as quick as possible.

1 step back, 2 steps forward. Better then keeping at a stand still by not making HDD standard, and NOT using a new larger format (3 discs for blue dragon anyone?).
Love the pic :)
sirpilf: Please tell us how MS could have used either HD-DVD or blu-ray given they weren't even players when the console was released, let alone when the console was being designed.
I agree about the HDD though, that was stupidity. Saying that though, I think the only console that hasn't taken at least one step back is the Wii. I can't think of anything the gamecube had that the Wii doesn't.
BUT WHY IS THE RUM(BLE) GONE??!!
It really gets on my tits when people say things like 'MGS is an FPS'. It's just not. Neither was Gears when Kotaku said it was too. First person shooter means first person, not third.
Haha, please don't tell me the only pic of this guy you could find is the one where he is standing in front of a 360 backdrop. You guys are hilarious.

Foreshadowing.
@Psychotext
"I can't think of anything the gamecube had that the Wii doesn't."
Well, there isnt anything the Xbox had that the 360 doesnt, so I guess not having HDD or HD-DVD player from the beginning arent really steps backward.
But if we go from what you said at first, then the Wii did make a step back by not making HDD standard either. Also it could be argued by non-Nintendo fans that the lack of graphic quality is a step back in the next-generation. Note that I say non-Nintendo fans, as the fans will disagree with me entirely with the word "innovation."
If the game sucks, and I mean sucks, then you'll miss the rumble. If the game is good then you won't get a shit if the rumble is there or not.
There are plenty of clues to indicate that Konami will ultimately put MGS4 on the 360.
First, would be the Q-Man tip in EGM.
Second, the 1up show interview with the American guy that works at Konami Japan.
Third, Kojima saying he misses Rumble.
Why argue that this won't happen? Are Sony fans really going to be that angry if the game moves elsewhere? If it gets on a different console, it makes more money and helps the development team make even better games.
Also, including Sixaxis control does not immediately mean that the game could not be moved to a different platform. Sixaxis control is just a different way to perform moves that you could emulate with the analog sticks. The games hints at Sixaxis control are in no way deep enough that they could not recreated in some other fashion.
I'd take rumble over SIXAXIS definitely.
I just love the rumble feature on Table Tennis, it allows you to really control where the ball is going, by warning you of overcooking it.
I haven't used the SIXAXIS, but those directions posted a few weeks ago about Virtua Tennis doesn't really sell it for me...
could all those pretty little xbox360 signs in the back mean something? *hint hint*
I would love to play MGS. Ive only played at a friends, but I refuse to buy a PS2/PS3. Hopefully, someday...
BTW, loving my rumble :) *BRRRRRRRRRRRRRR*
I still don't miss the rumble. :) It's simply not on the radar as far as features that "made" a game what it is. Easily forgettable.
BTW, I only own a 360 and Wii (and DS Lite).
@logikil
While all the reasons you have listed are flimsy at best (save the 'more money' reaason, which you didn't enumerate), I would be more inclined to agree with you if you had said: "Kojima will put a title on the X360", as opposed to MGS4 specifically. I think Kojima's Japanese loyalty (and Sony's money) will keep MGS4 away from the X360 for at least a year after release, if not forever. It seems more likely for the X360 to get a second tier Kojima Studios title, like Zone of the Enders.
Trying:
Hints and rumors are generally flimsy, otherwise they would be called evidence. Also the money issue is motivation for, not hints at.
TryingNot2H8you: Word is that Konami is pushing the issue. Kojima apparently doesn't want to see MGS4 on the 360.
I've heard the rumor too. The higher-ups at Konami want to go to the hot system right now and make more moolah. Kojimi is completely against it and I can't say that I disagree with him. I miss the days of console exclusives and there aren't many anymore. While one part of me is glad that I won't have to buy all of the system's to experience good games, another part is sad.
Exclusves defined a system and Sony had some of the best. That seems to be changing rapidly. It's only a matter of time before the big name RPG's defect too. I've already heard that the next numbered Dragon Quest will be Wii only.
Remember, Kojima also said that the game will be much bigger than DVD9 (8GB). MGS3 already pushed its limit and it had to delete quite a few features just to fit in. People can say that it's easy to just put multiple DVDs, but if the game is completely non-linear (like Guild Wars, War of WarCraft), do you really think you wanna switch discs back and forth? Like if you need to return to stage 1 to pick something, then go to stage 6 again, then go back to stage 3. Not convenient, eh?
But then again, this is MGS. It might be linear. Too linear...
Yeah i would have to say the use of that picture is just pure journalistic brilliance.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the 360 is only a "hot system" because it was released prior to this month. The PS3 and Wii have not even released enough units for initial demand yet, and that is with the PS3 having barely any titles. This game is still probably over a year away, and I would be surprised if the 360 has a dominent sales lead, if any, at that point.
