PS3 Delay Is Great News! Really!

playstation3180.jpgChris Morris at CNN Money takes a look at the PS3 delay. His conclusion? It's a good thing.

Well, yes, that's probably jolly well true — it is good that Sony delayed the launch of a console they haven't even started building yet. But Chris' argument is that the unspoken reason behind the delay is less because Sony hasn't even finalized design and more because it gives developers more time to polish their games. He forecasts not enough Playstation 3s to go around at launch, creating an consumerist pandemonium that will drive many right into the arms of the 360. If this is the case, Chris argues that it will be critically important for the launch titles to be excellent enough to make shoppers hold out for a PS3.

An added perk to this entire delay may very well be that the launch titles are better, but we're skeptical it will make any difference. The XBox 360 will have been around at that point long enough that it will have a larger and stronger library. With the shortages that are likely to be inherent in a global Sony launch, there's just no way 360 sales aren't going to surge when people can't buy a PS3... especially when its more advanced titles start coming out later this year.

This delay isn't good news for Sony, it's bad news — they're going to be a year behind on the next generation. It's hard to look at the development of the PS3 as anything besides a fubar.
