Graduate student Jonas Hielscher put together a pretty amazing little interactive media game for the Playstation Portable as part of his project for masters program in Media Technology at Leiden University.
ColleTic has you running around outside trying to collect WLAN access points with your portable. Each point is given a distinct color, geometric shape and sound based on its particular MAC address. The size of the point is determined by how strong the signal is. The object of the game is to fill your three-by-three grid with shapes, finishing with three in a row.
The one twist is that every time you collect an unsecure access point it can either wipe your grid clean or act as a wildcard, so to speak.
The game allows you to set a time limit, and of course gamers can choose to set their own physical boundaries as well.
Hielscher says the game will be available for download on his site in the near future. The game requires firmware 2.0 to play.
This sounds like it has a lot of potential, either exactly as designed or as part of a larger more intricate game that uses this idea as a sort of modifier. Though, I'm sure the last thing Sony lawyers want is a bunch of guys hanging around peoples' windows with their PSPs trying to "collect" a bigger WLAN point.
