Analyst: Apple Entering Console Market?

Prudential analyst Jesse Tortora speculates that Apple could be planning to combine technology from its product line to create a game console in order to defend it's hold on the home entertainment industry from Microsoft.

"We think the videogame market represents a distinct possibility for Apple, especially considering that it recently announced the availability of videogames for its iPod through its iTunes store," Tortora said in a note to clients.

Tortora bases the analysis on the recent inclusion of games for the iPod on iTunes and Apple's hiring of game software and hardware developers.

I doubt this will happen. I just don't think Apple can invest 4-5 years on a single, non-changing piece of hardware. First the iGame would launch. Then they make it smaller. A few months later they release it in a rainbow of colors with new features. II don't even want to think about how much they'd charge for it, but who knows? With their focus on digital delivery systems, an Apple game system could very well fill the hole left in our hearts by the Phantom.
